TOPIK

I did the official Korean government proficiency test this morning, as you can see. Looking through past papers, I wasn't sure whether to do level 1 (looked very easy) or level 2 (some bits too hard). I plumped for 1급, as I'm so busy at the moment I wasn't going to have time to prepare (well that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

The first half was a piece of cake -- only two answers I wasn't completely sure of out of 60, and as it turned out I guessed one of those correctly. Then in the interval I met David from Walthamstow, a 3급 student who, stunningly, recognised me from this site! There are only six levels, so 3급 is halfway to native fluency. Anyway, good to meet you David -- I couldn't hang about afterwards but would be interesting to chat again sometime.

The second half was listening and reading comprehension, and was much harder. Actually, the listening wasn't that bad but I got out of synch with the tape and was staring at the wrong set of answers wondering why none of them matched up with the dialogue! The reading was pretty hard going in places. If you're thinking of doing TOPIK and wondering which level to do, it might be useful to know that I'm near the end of Sogang book 2A.

Not sure when the results are but naturally I'll place a huge image of the certificate here if I pass, and accidentally forget to mention it if I fail. (You see, I'm finally getting the hang of blogging culture, just as it's going out of fashion! Typical.)
